Scotland's West Coast is considered by yachtsmen to be the equal of the Caribbean and the Aegean as a sailing ground. A scattering of hundreds of islands, lonely anchorages, exiting weather, testing tides and the romance of cruising through these ancient clan lands. There are also a dozen malt whisky distilleries on the West Coast, so what is more logical than to combine the two great pursuits: whisky and sailing?
In partnership with Stuart Robertson, owner and skipper of the splendid 8-berth sloop, Grampus, I am hoping to host one or more cruises this summer, should anyone be interested.
Each will truly be a 'voyage of discovery' of the Western Isles, the Sea of the Hebrides and the 'Seaboard of the Gael'; of places of historical note, including some of the region's more interesting pubs and restaurants; and of whisky. Through my contacts in the whisky industry I propose to arrange bespoke distillery tours, tastings led by senior staff and distillery managers, tutored tastings, historical talks and meetings with remarkable people aboard ship.
Every six-day voyage will be planned according to the wishes of the charterer in relation to the balance of sea- and shore-based activities, and which distilleries to visit. Always bearing in mind the constraints that tides and weather impose upon any nautical expedition!
