Masterclasses

In conjunction with the Scotch Malt Whisky Society, I will be hosting a series of 'Whisky Masterclasses' in the Society's splendid premises in Edinburgh.

You do not have to be a member of the Society to join a class (although members are eligible at a preferential rate!), and you can join up as a group or as an individual. Numbers for each class will be limited to ten.

Outline

The courses will be modular and flexible; both theoretical and practical.

The basic course will be delivered over the course of a full day (8 hours, including breaks for coffee, lunch and tea). Advanced courses - taking the subject a stage further - or courses adapted to specific needs (e.g. whisky trade, bar staff) will be available on request.

Content

The goal of the course will be to increase the enjoyment of malt whisky through understanding:

• how we evaluate it (aroma and flavour; basic physiology; tasting procedure; describing aromas)
• where aromas/flavours come from (during the production and maturation processes)
• how whisky has evolved, and how flavour has changed (i.e. history of plant, social history, economic history)

Secondary and advanced content (according to the needs of the group) might include: blended whisky (history and points of difference), serving whisky, stock controls and profitability, talking about whisky (romance and reality), visits to one or more distillery, whisky and food (including a whisky dinner).
